Transformative methodology
Our interventions are rooted in methodological principles that seek to transform the life conditions of young people through effective and long-term economic empowerment. Our inspiration comes from two methodologies: the Freirian Methodology, in which the role of education is to teach how to read the world in order to be able to transform it, and the Active Learning Methodology, which is based on 'learning by doing'. MUVA has applied a gender lens to the principles of these methodologies. For us, gender equality involves understanding the intrinsic power relations and how we position ourselves in society. From this deep understanding, young people can understand and define where and how they want to be in the world. With these principles, we create a space for learning and reflection, which is the basis for the socio-economic transformation of participants. Our 'agents of change' are trained and mentored to be responsible for the facilitation of these methodologies, which start from reflections, interactions and significant individual and collective experiences. The individual and group transformation goes through the development of self-esteem, self-knowledge, self-awareness, and the ability to deal with and overcome problems that block professional and individual growth. Our methodologies were tested and adapted over the course of MUVA’s different projects in Mozambique. In partnership, we were able to expand these methodologies to other countries such as Chad, Guinea Bissau, Malawi and Brazil.
